In-person handovers

Why do I pay a deposit before reserving a bike?

This is how BikeFair works to ensure a smooth sale transaction. You are not obliged to accept (buy) the bike yet - your money is securely held by BikeFair until you see and try the bike, and confirm the handover. Only then do we send it to the original seller. We do this for a number of reasons:

  • Sellers don't mind putting the bike you reserved to one side if they know you have the money available.

  • It enables easy card/iDeal payments.

  • Avoids haggling and other potentially risky pay-on-the-spot situations.

The whole process keeps you in control, so if you don’t want the bike when test riding it, you can simply cancel the order at any time by simply clicking “Cancel order” in your Orders -> Order details.

Getting your bike delivered

How do I know if I need to pay for delivery?

Every bike has a radius in which you are entitled to pick the bike up for free, or the seller will even deliver to you at no extra cost. Check the map in the “Delivery options” section of the bike that you are interested in. Beyond this radius, you can have a bike delivered, but you’ll have to pay the delivery fee (the standard delivery fee on BikeFair is €39 for regular bikes within the mainland of the Netherlands).

Problems with your order

What should I do if I have a problem with my bike?

You can head to the Orders page on your BikeFair profile and click the “Raise a complaint” button. Here, you will see what guarantee you have on the bike and whether it is currently active. You can then describe the problem with your bike and upload photos and/or videos to highlight this issue. Submitting a complaint notifies the seller and BikeFair of the issue with your order and reopens communication so a solution can be found. Some examples of solutions include the sellers repairing the bike themselves, or providing compensation if this is not possible. They could also send out the right bike or a suitable alternative for you.

Important: don’t pay for anything relating to the complaint without the consent of the seller as this could invalidate the guarantee and all related claims.

Returns

What are the types of returns policies that sellers can offer?

Sellers offer these options to return a bike that has been delivered:

  • Free returns: The seller will cover both the shipping cost and the return cost for you. Please be mindful of the environment when ordering.

  • Return covered by buyer: In this case the original shipping cost will not be refunded and then the buyer will have to cover the cost of returning the bike to the seller. The buyer can do this by dropping off the bike themself. Alternatively, it can be organised by BikeFair for a fee of €39 (the standard delivery fee) or sometimes the seller will offer cheaper delivery rates to the buyer.

  • Paid returns: You will be charged for the delivery and the eventual return of the bike. The shipping cost will automatically be deducted from any refund to the buyer. For the return, the buyer can do this by dropping off the bike themself. Alternatively, it can be organised by BikeFair for a fee of €39 (the standard delivery fee) or sometimes the seller will offer cheaper delivery rates to the buyer.

This means that, taking the typical rate to be €39 one way, if the delivery both ways was handled by BikeFair, €78 would be the maximum cost to return a bike.

If you have reserved a bike for an in-person handover, it is important to know what returns policy the seller offers in this case before confirming the handover, as they are not obliged to provide a returns policy. Of course, you are able to inspect and test ride the bike before confirming the bike too, so check and double check to make sure the bike is okay - don’t worry, you can always cancel the order.

In-person handovers

What to expect from a handover?

So you have a buyer who wants to test ride the bike and now it’s time to arrange a meeting. Choose a spot that you know well in a public area and bring a friend if it makes you feel safer. And don’t forget your bike of course!

You should let the buyer check the bike over and take it for a test ride - they have the right to do this and have already paid a full deposit on the bike.

Important: If it goes well and the buyer wants to take the bike, make sure they confirm the handover on their BikeFair profile. Are they having trouble with this? You can call us on +31 85 0027787 or send an email to [email protected] and we can make sure the handover gets confirmed.

Selling your bike via delivery

Someone ordered my bike for delivery outside the radius that I want to deliver. Now what?

Congratulations! In this case, a buyer has liked the look of your bike so much that they have paid to have it delivered to them!

BikeFair handles this process for you, so we will be in touch with you to arrange the pickup of your bicycle. It is important to be really clear with the buyer about the state of the bike that they hope to receive - if there are major issues with the bike then you may be held responsible for any compensation or returns of the bike.

A quick clean and some basic packaging (for example some bubble wrap, cardboard or other protective material around the saddle, handlebars and any other protruding parts of the bike is the bear minimum) will go a long way in making a good first impression on the buyer when the bike gets delivered to them.

If you have any questions about the delivery process, please don’t hesitate to call our customer service team on call +31 85 0027787 or by e-mail at [email protected]. We'll gladly help you out with any queries.

When do I get paid?

So, the buyer has the bike, now it’s time to get your reward!

  • For in-person handovers, we release the money to your account after 7 days.

  • For deliveries, this period is 14 days after the bike arrived at its new home. This is to reflect the legal right of withdrawal that a buyer has when making an online purchase.

Can I get paid in cash?

Buyers protection guarantee

What is Buyers Protection guarantee?

BikeFair is a marketplace, and while we try to verify every seller and bike, with thousands of new bikes being offered every month, we're simply not able to check every single bicycle in person. Buyer Protection program helps us run the platform, digitally check all bicycles against theft, ensure a 100% safe payment environment and guarantee that you get what you ordered.
